Launching Science Based Targets for Seafood: A Tool for Industry

Mar 18 2025

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM EDT

Room 153CB

The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) Ocean Hub, co-led by WWF and Conservation International, is thrilled to launch Version 1 of Science Based-Targets for Seafood Value Chains at Seafood Expo North America and Seafood Expo Global.

SBTN methodology is a new tool that supports the seafood industry’s journey to create and meet robust environmental responsibility targets. By empowering businesses to operate within Earth’s limits while meeting society’s needs, science-based targets give companies a clear pathway to competitiveness and resilience, using science to define their role in protecting and restoring nature and biodiversity while creating consistency across corporate  commitments.

This session will involve a panel discussion and Q&A session exploring how companies can leverage this new guidance to drive positive environmental impact, mitigate supply chain risks, and unlock new opportunities within their seafood systems. We’ll hear about the experiences of companies that participated in SBTNs pilot of the methodology and highlight key benefits of target-setting, reinforcing that SBTN is closing critical gaps in corporate sustainability by:

  • Increasing ambition and action on nature that is backed by science.
Providing credibility and a common language to advance engagement with stakeholders.
  • Acting as a trusted compass for companies to implement effective solutions.

This methodology covers wild capture and farmed seafood and includes several key drivers of nature and biodiversity loss.

  • Target 1: Avoid and Reduce Overexploitation
  • Target 2: Protect Structural Marine Habitats
  • Target 3: Reduce Risks to Endangered, Threatened, and Protected Marine Wildlife Populations
