Dr. Sonja Jones

Dr. Sonja Jones is a Food Technologist with the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, where she serves as a subject matter expert on Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) and the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (the Standard). With over 15 years of experience in food safety, labeling, regulatory compliance, and policy development, she provides technical expertise to support rulemaking, develop compliance strategies, and offer guidance to stakeholders.

Her professional background includes significant work with the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, where she played a key role in food safety investigations and enforcement initiatives to enhance public health protections. Dr. Jones holds a Ph.D. in Food Science & Technology, as well as a Master of Public Administration from Louisiana State University. Additionally, she earned a Master of Science in Veterinary Medical Science from Mississippi State University and a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Mississippi University for Women.
