The 28th edition of Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global opens its doors tomorrow for the first time in Barcelona to bring the global seafood industry back together in-person

The world’s largest seafood trade fair kicks off face-to-face events for the global seafood industry with 1,550 exhibiting companies from 76 countries and 59 national and regional pavilions covering 39,847m2 of net exhibit space

 This 28th edition of the event includes an extensive program of 20 conference sessions which will analyze the industry’s main challenges and showcase the latest innovations in the sector

Barcelona, Spain – 25 April 2022 – Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global, the world’s largest seafood trade event, opens tomorrow for its first year at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Vía exhibition centre. For three days, it will turn the city into the sector’s largest international platform. With the presence of 1,550 exhibiting companies from 76 countries, the 28th edition of the Expo will mark the return of face-to-face events for the global seafood industry and will welcome thousands of suppliers and buyers from all over the world. The global meeting is expected to generate an economic impact of up to 100 million euros for the city.

Seafood Expo Global/Seafood Processing Global is the world’s largest and most diverse global seafood trade event. From 26-28 April, it will bring together the key players in the seafood sector from around the world: seafood, equipment, packaging and service suppliers, buyers from retail, foodservice and distribution companies, importers, governmental authorities, and industry leaders. The event, which will host 59 national and regional pavilions, will occupy a total of 39,847 net m2 throughout halls 2, 3, 4 and 5, and the Galleria between halls 4 and 5.

 International platform for the industry

For three days, starting tomorrow, Barcelona will become the international epicentre of the seafood business, with participation of exhibitors from around the globe.  Countries like Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, the Falklands, Lebanon and French island Réunion, that were not represented in 2019 in Brussels, have confirmed their attendance. Other countries such as Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Greece, Iceland, India, Ireland, Lithuania, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay, United States and Vietnam will also be present tomorrow.

At Seafood Expo Global, exhibitors will present the latest seafood products – fresh, frozen, canned, value-added, processed and packaged – to industry buyers from around the world, including supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, caterers, importers, distributors, seafood markets and other retail and hospitality companies.

Seafood Processing Global encompasses every aspect of seafood processing, including packaging materials and machinery, refrigeration and freezing equipment, primary processing systems, secondary processing systems, hygiene control, and sanitary and quality control services.

The latest innovations and trends in the sector

The 28th edition of this global event is a great opportunity to discover the latest trends in the sector and learn about the innovations applied in the seafood industry, including hake spaghetti, seaweed pâté and flambéed salmon burgers. The Expo will announce the winners of its prestigious annual Seafood Excellence Global Awards competition, which recognizes the best seafood products of the year presented at the event. The winners will be revealed tomorrow evening at the awards reception in room 5.1 in the CC5 space of Hall 5.

 Comprehensive program of presentations to address the industry’s major challenges

This year, the event features an extensive conference program with more than 20 educational sessions that will address the main challenges the seafood industry faces. More than 65 leading international experts from the sector will gather in Barcelona to offer practical and theoretical insight into key current topics including aquaculture, the seafood business and leadership, the latest projects in sustainability, and initiatives to tackle climate change and its effects on the maritime ecosystem.

A Keynote address by Megan Greene (global economist, Financial Times columnist and senior research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School) will open the conference program. Other speakers include Amy Novogratz, co-founder and managing partner of Aqua-Spark; Audun Lem, deputy director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division of FAO; Javier Garat, president of Europêche and the International Coalition of Fisheries Associations (ICFA); and Christophe Vande Weyer, policy officer at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, among many other industry leaders.
