Current position as Global Fisheries Analyst and Project Lead on Fisheries Welfare at Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP).

Work is focused on the data-driven assessment of fishing stocks worldwide and fishing operations, assessing SFP’s global impact in the seafood landscape. By running analyses of biological and management data to evaluate the sustainability and environmental impact of fisheries worldwide, it ensures that the FishSource database remains a rigorous, science-based resource for the global seafood industry.

On Fisheries Welfare, the work aims to integrate animal welfare guidelines into commercial fishing practices in strict collaboration with industry partners, by developing quantifiable indicators and running risk assessment analysis with industry stakeholders to implement pragmatic, viable, scalable solutions that help improve fish welfare during the capture process, onboard handling and slaughter procedures.

Education:

Five-year degree as a Marine and fisheries biologist at the University of Algarve (Portugal), researching coastal fish populations in estuarine and fish nursery areas. Received an MSc and PhD in Aquatic Biosciences from the University of Tokyo (Japan), focused on the early life stages of fish and habitat connectivity. 

Professional Career:

Worked as an Associate Researcher at the Southern Chile Fisheries Research Centre (Chile), leading research projects on fish stock sustainability associated with environmental conditions.

More recently, works as a Researcher at the University of Algarve (Portugal) for a European Research Consortium (CareFish Catch), studying the impact of fisheries on fish welfare.
