Bertrand has for ~30 years been monitoring ESG/sustainability & other topics material to seafood & ocean stakeholders. He has a pluri-disciplinary background in biology, natural resources management & journalism (foreign correspondent in Eire and Northern Ireland, science writer, freelancer & editor). He’s one of the co-founders of IntraFish.com in the late 1990s. He authored of the “Seafood Intelligence” benchmarks (2010-2017) focusing on global salmon farming & seafood industry’s Top 100 corporation’s level of transparency and accountability.
Bertrand joined the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) in 2017 and is a strong advocate of industry accountability and of a UN SDG-aligned approach to sustainability. He co-authored ASC’s 2022 SDG Report using a qualitative and quantitative methodology to holistically map out sustainable aquaculture performance/alignment against the 17 SDGs/169 targets. He follows closely several EU files (CSRD/ESRS, CSDDD etc.) and other international frameworks.
He sits on the World Benchmarking Alliance’s Expert Review Committee for the Food and Agriculture Benchmark (FAB) after 6 years on the Seafood Stewardship Index (SSI) ERC; represents ASC on the Steering Committee of the Science Based Targets for Nature (SBTN) Ocean Hub (‘Ocean SBTs’; launched in 2025).
