Fisheries and aquaculture provide nutrition to people and animals, providing about 17% of the world’s meat consumption, and employing almost 60 million people. Fish and seafood make up 7% of current food production, contributing > USD 600 billion in revenue globally.

With global seafood demands expected to increase in the future, it is important to have a thorough understanding of current and future pressures on the marine environment.

Topics that will be covered:

1.      winners & losers of climate change, and a way forward (Ray Hilborn), 

2.      ocean deoxygenation, knowns and unknowns (Babette Hoogakker),

3.      global changes in seafood production (Manuel Barange/Michel Kaiser), 

4.      contribution of fishing to CO2 outputs and the MSC GHG Reporting Project  (Kate Wright)

5.      fishing impacts on carbon stores: prognosis and solutions (Marija Sciberras/Michel Kaiser), 

6.      transitioning fishing to alternative energy sources (Magnus Johnson).

Talks will be followed by a 15 minute panel discussion, and a networking session
