Artificial intelligence (AI) is part of our daily lives from facial recognition to Amazon’s delivery algorithms. Even traditional industries, such as agriculture, are using weather, satellite and soil data to train algorithms to optimize crop yields. So how is AI going to disrupt seafood? Because of the natural variability of fish, seafood producers often find it difficult to predict quality and production outcomes, such as yields. As it turns out, that’s a perfect problem for artificial intelligence which can help the industry become more predictable and profitable. In fact, the aquaculture sector is rapidly adopting artificial intelligence and computer vision is becoming more common in electronic monitoring of fisheries. In this talk, Eric will provide an overview of what is AI, including machine learning and computer vision. He’ll then survey the application of AI in the seafood sector, looking at data on more than 400 software applications currently being used in the industry. He’ll then present some examples of researching currently being conducted.
