High diversity of fisheries resources has been maintained in Japan. Global warming and aging population in Japan become major threats for fisheries. Therefore, the seafood sector in Japan faces challenges due to those threats. Japan promotes eco-label certificates for sustainable seafood. Marine Eco-Label Japan (MEL Japan) is one of them and covers certificates for wild capture fisheries, aquaculture, and chain of custody. In his presentation, Masaya Katoh will introduce the MEL Japan scheme and its updates including new feed standards. Moreover, he will present public recognition and future of MEL Japan and recent fisheries reforms by the Government of Japan.
