Indonesia has almost 3 million fisherfolks and most of them live below the poverty line, representing 25% of Indonesia’s poor communities (Antara News Agency). After working closely with the small-scale fishers, Aruna found out that the main problems in the coastal communities are involving the inefficient supply chain, poor data, and bad quality control. Aruna comes as a solution to solve these problems. We develop technology to help cut the long lines of the supply chain, ensuring the fishers get fair prices and access to a wider and more stable market. As Aruna is casting such a wide net across the nation, we are committed to put sustainability as our top priority and are proud to declare that our mission statement is “Making the Sea a Better Livelihood for All”. We believe that we are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 14: Life below Water. The SDG 14 addresses that oceans face the threats of marine and nutrient pollution, resource depletion and climate change, all of which are caused primarily by human actions. These threats place further pressure on environmental systems, like biodiversity and natural infrastructure, while creating global socio-economic problems, including health, safety and financial risks. In order to combat these issues and promote ocean sustainability, innovative solutions that prevent and mitigate detrimental impacts to marine environments are essential. However, despite the gaps, Aruna is not staying still in dealing with sustainability. As the main goal of SDG 14 is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development, through multiple past and ongoing initiatives, Aruna puts a lot of effort into sustainability. Included in these initiatives are stepping towards MSC Certifications, community development, mangrove reforestation, zero waste hubs, conversion of energy resources, providing our fishers with sustainable fishing gears and most importantly, educating the fishers and empowering the women of coastal communities.
