Workshop by The Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability – Session 1: Connecting seafood supply chains to accelerate sustainable change – how a Common Language and Traceability enable market access and help safeguard a sustainable future

Sep 12 2023

10:15 AM - 11:15 AM EDT

Without supply chain traceability, it is very difficult to manage food safety concerns, prove legality, and verify sustainability—current issues that consumers, investors, regulators, and media are increasingly demanding. Traceability standards are the essential bridge that facilitates interoperable communication between trading partners seeking to meet safety, ethical and sustainability reporting requirements.
Data insights from the implementation of traceability standards can help businesses become more efficient and cost-effective. It also enables businesses to verify sustainability claims and responsible production. But to accelerate sustainable change, seafood businesses also need clear guidance regarding producing, purchasing, and trading seafood in a responsible manner. The key to promoting collective action, and providing pathways for improvement, lies in bringing local and global actors together. When buyers and producers speak the same language and have access to digital traceability, everyone can help drive improvement, and move the sector towards more environmentally and socially responsible management practices.
This session will encourage a lively discussion on why and how the implementation of a common language framework and traceability standards for seafood supply chains are essential stepping stones to meet regulatory compliance, third-party certifications, to enable market access and long-term financial, environmental and social sustainability.
