Europe (Scandinavia, France & Spain) Japan, USA and the Middle East have recently seen exciting massive new RAS (recirculating aquaculture systems) projects that have attracted major seafood companies and investors alike. Recirculating aquaculture seems indeed to be a no brainer: great for the environment; technologically mature; promising for markets; profitable for investors. On the other hand, many hurdles still pave the road ahead of these projects: high capital intensity; unproven technology for big volumes; permitting and regulatory constraints, water issues and animal wellbeing among a few.
